There Is More To Orlando Than Just Mickey

By Andrew John

An Orlando vacation can involve various activities, but the most popular attractions are certainly the theme parks although it has a great deal more to offer. Orlando Town is also your destination for museums, galleries, historical places, edifices, flea markets, churches and much more. The city has been attracting tourists for a long time and justifiably so as it has just about everything the visitor could want.

As one of the most tourist centered cities in the world, Orlando a great deal to offer including large shopping malls, restaurants of every type, night clubs, bars and many specialist shops. An Orlando vacation is a destination that offers a wide range of attractions perfect for adults and children of all ages.

The Central Florida Zoo for instance only opened back in 1975 and was owned by the Sanford Fire Department prior to that but is now the home to over four hundred animals. Even though it is privately owned, it is run by a charitable group with the intention of providing classes for children and protecting species that are only found in Florida and other world wide exotic animals.

Then there are the works of Louis Tiffany whose famous collection is housed here in the Morse Museum of American Art. This collection comprises Tiffany art glass, clayware and ornaments plus the chapel interior designed for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.

While Orlando may appear on the surface to be a town designed for the entertainment of children that could not be farther from the truth with adults equally well looked after. For people that prefer the night, the list of things to do on an Orlando vacation is almost endless with families, teenagers and adults all well looked after.

Another great place to visit about twenty minutes drive from Orlando Airport is The Orlando Science Center, originating back to 1955; it is a huge complex with over two hundred thousand square feet of exhibition space spanning ten halls. An alternative to this would be the International Trolley and Train Museum which can be found along International Drive and has one of the country's largest operating indoor G gauge layouts in a space of over four thousand square feet.

On International Drive there is the Mercado Center which is the home to the wonderfully moving, sad and at times eerie Titanic exhibition which actually displays a number of original items from the great ship. Lake Eola Park on the other hand has a pleasant 43 acres to stroll around and relax or perhaps a little boating on the lake.

Now you couldn't possibly visit Orlando without a trip to the numerous theme parks including Disney World, Universal Studios and of course not to forget the fantastic Seaworld. If you have never vacationed in Orlando before, you must try it at least once; it doesn't really matter when you go, however holiday seasons do get busy, especially Christmas; well, who wouldn't want to spend Christmas with Mickey. - 30423
